What is an Investment Linked Policy (ILP)?
There are 2 types of Investment Linked policy (ILP) in the market.
- An Investment Linked policy (ILP) that has both Life insurance and Investment components. Your premiums are used to purchase units in Investment Linked sub-fund(s) of your choice. A portion of the units you purchased are then sold to pay for insurance and other charges, while the rest remain invested.
- A pure Investment Linked policy (ILP) that works solely for Wealth Accumulation. Majority of these plans are principal guaranteed upon death.
Currently, there are 2 premium payment options for Investment Linked policy (ILP).
- Single Premium Policy – Lump Sum placement to purchase units in a Unit Trust sub-fund(s). Lower health and protection coverage compare to regular premium policy.
- Regular Premium Policy – Premium paid on an ongoing basis, health and protection coverage can be adjusted based on individual needs and preference.

How do we compare Investment Linked Policies (ILP)?
Depending on your individual financial needs, we will compare Investment Linked policies (ILP) for you based on:
- Policy Charges: One of the most important aspect for comparison. Higher policy charges means your policy will take longer to reach your targeted investment goal.
- Cost of Insurance: If Wealth Accumulation is your ultimate goal for investing, you have to choose a plan that does not provide coverage, and hence, does not charge Cost of Insurance to your portfolio. Cost of Insurance will take a toll on your investment returns, especially if you are 40 years old and above. Cost of Insurance rises as your age increases, and units will be deducted to pay for your Cost of Insurance. If your Cost of Insurance is higher than your Investment yield, there might be a chance that your plan will lapse. Therefore, it is important to review your existing Investment Linked Policy (ILP) to understand more about your current plan. Contact us today for a Free Portfolio Review with no obligations! Don’t need to thank us. Sharing is caring!
- Minimum Investment Period (MIP): Minimum Investment Period (MIP) refers to the minimum number of years you need to pay for your premiums. Premiums not fulfilled during the Minimum Investment Period will be subjected to Premium Holiday Charges, affecting your overall yield.
- Premium: The minimum amount of premium payment required for the Investment Linked policy (ILP). Premium stays the same throughout the payment premium.
- Supplementary Riders: The availability of riders for add on to provide comprehensive coverage or waive premium payment when an insurable event occurs.
